Preparing Your Dog for Grooming
A little preparation can help make your dog’s grooming visit calmer and more comfortable. Use this guide to prepare before the appointment, plan for drop off, and give the PawPlex team the information they need.
Before Booking
Tell Us About Your Dog
When requesting an appointment, share accurate information about your dog’s size, coat, previous grooming experience, and comfort with handling. This helps the PawPlex team understand your dog before the visit begins.
Mention anything that may affect the appointment, including sensitive areas, difficulty standing for long periods, fear of grooming tools, or previous stressful grooming experiences.
Explain the Result You Want
Describe the haircut, coat length, or grooming result you have in mind. Photos may help explain your preferences, although the final result will depend on your dog’s coat condition and what can be completed comfortably.
Before the Visit
Prepare at Home
Keep your dog’s routine as normal as possible before the appointment. Sudden changes in food, activity, or schedule may make an already unfamiliar day feel more disruptive.
Brush your dog only when it can be done comfortably and safely. Do not pull forcefully at tangles or attempt to cut mats close to the skin at home.

Appointment Day
Before Leaving Home
Give your dog an opportunity to use the bathroom before traveling to The PawPlex. A short, calm walk may also help release some energy before the appointment.
Follow your dog’s normal feeding routine unless The PawPlex has provided different instructions. Avoid making major changes to your dog’s routine on the morning of the appointment.
Use a Secure Leash or Carrier
Dogs should arrive on a secure leash with a properly fitted collar or harness. Keeping your dog safely controlled makes arrival easier around other pets, customers, and vehicles.
At Drop Off
Keep the Goodbye Calm
A long or emotional goodbye can sometimes make a nervous dog more unsettled. Try to keep your voice and movements calm while the PawPlex team checks your dog in.
Review your grooming request, point out sensitive areas, and confirm the best phone number for reaching you. Then allow the team to begin helping your dog settle into the appointment.

Avoid Last Minute Coat Fixes
Do not attempt to cut tight mats, shave sensitive areas, or remove severe tangles immediately before the appointment. Cutting close to the skin at home can cause accidental injury.
Tell the groomer about the coat condition and allow the PawPlex team to discuss the available options with you.
Helping a Nervous Dog Prepare
If your dog becomes nervous around grooming tools, unfamiliar people, or new environments, let the PawPlex team know before the appointment. Knowing this in advance gives the team useful context before handling begins.
A calm routine, secure transportation, and a brief drop off may help make the transition easier. Avoid forcing grooming practice at home if your dog is showing fear or strong resistance.
Puppies and First Visits
